Tips & Tricks for Travelling Your Horse Safely in a 2-Stall Horsebox
Transporting horses can be one of the most stressful parts of horse ownership - for both horse and rider. BUT it doesn’t need to be!
Whether you are heading to a competition, clinic, hunt meet or vet, preparation and good habits make all the difference.
Our Overlander 2-stall horsebox offers convenience, comfort and safety, but understanding how to use it correctly helps ensure every journey is calm and stress-free.
At Overlander Ireland we know horse transport inside and out. Here are our top tips and tricks for travelling horses safely and easily in your 2-stall horsebox.
1. Make Loading a Positive Experience
· Practise loading at home regularly
· Allow them time to stand inside quietly
· Use calm handling and consistent routines
· Reward good behaviour with praise or treats
2. Check Your Horsebox Before Every Journey
· Tyre pressure and condition
· Lights and indicators
· Ramp security
· Partition
· Ventilation and windows
· Fuel levels
· Cameras – internal and reversing
3. Use Proper Travel Equipment
· Well-fitted travel boots or bandages
· Tail guard
· Lightweight travel rug depending on weather
· Leather or safety headcollar
· Haynet positioned safely at head height
4. Balance Weight Correctly in a 2-Stall Horsebox
· Typically travel a single horse behind the driver - however our box is well balanced so if your horse is more comfortable on the inside that is ok too!
· Secure tack and equipment properly
· Avoid loose items moving around during travel
· Keep heavier storage low and balanced particularly if using the luton area
5. Drive Smoothly and Steadily
· Accelerate gradually
· Brake gently
· Take corners slowly
· Leave extra stopping distance
· Avoid sudden lane changes
6. Ensure Good Ventilation
· Reduce stress and overheating – use the intake and extraction modes and switch between every 45 minutes if on longer journeys.
· Prevent respiratory irritation – have windows open if not using the air conditioning.
7. Plan Longer Journeys Carefully
· Schedule rest stops
· Offer water regularly
· Check horses throughout the journey
· Allow horses time to relax after unloading
8. Travel With Essentials On Board
· Equine first aid kit
· Spare lead ropes and headcollars
· Water containers
· Emergency contact numbers
· Torch
· Basic tools
· Extra bedding or shavings – a bale will fit comfortably in the luton area.
9. Keep Your Horse Comfortable After Arrival
· Walk your horse for a few minutes
· Offer water
· Check for any signs of stiffness or stress
· Always allow time to settle before competing
